Claremont, California, located in Los Angeles County, is known as the "City of Trees and PhDs" because of its canopy of trees throughout town and the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of nine prestigious universities. It's also home to a charming downtown village, which is within walking distance from the train depot, colleges, and most residential neighborhoods. The City formed the Sustainable City Task Force in January 2008 to help green the city, and the Task Force is currently creating several city initiatives ranging from green building regulations to water conservation efforts to sustainability outreach events. It's a little slice of heaven in the sprawl of Southern California.
